What Champ does today
- Everything can be reached with a keyboard, and the place you are on always shows a clear outline.
- Pages can be zoomed in a long way, to 400 percent on a computer, without having to scroll sideways.
- On an iPhone, with Champ added to the home screen, or the Champ app from Google Play and the App Store, text follows the size you have chosen in your phone's settings.
- If you have asked your phone or computer for less motion, Champ does not slide, spin or animate.
- Colour is never the only way something is shown. Every tag, such as To check or Achieving, says it in words.
- Writing is checked against the contrast that the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) ask for.
- Buttons and links are large enough to tap easily, and the words are kept plain and short.
- Swipeable cards always come with buttons too, so nobody has to swipe.
- Photos shared in moments are described by their caption, or as a photo from the person who shared it.
What we aim for
Our goal is WCAG 2.2 at level AA, the standard most public services in Aotearoa New Zealand work to. We do not claim Champ meets it yet. We will say so only once someone outside the Champ team has tested it.
What was checked, and how
On 31 October 2026, 31 pages were checked: the public pages, and the layouts the Champ app uses on a phone and on a tablet. Each one was checked with:
- axe, a free automated checker, against WCAG 2.2 A and AA.
- A keyboard-only run, checking that every stop shows an outline.
- A narrow screen, the same as 400 percent zoom on a computer, checking that nothing needs sideways scrolling.
Every page passed all 3 checks.

What has not been done yet
- A full run with a screen reader (VoiceOver on iPhone and Mac, NVDA on Windows).
- The same automated checks on the signed-in pages of the website with a real family's view.
- The PDFs Champ makes, such as the 1-page copy and the funding pack, are not yet set up for screen readers. The same words are always on the page in Champ itself.
- A check by someone outside the Champ team.
Tell us about anything that gets in your way
If something in Champ is hard to use for you, we would like to know. Email hello@champ.kiwi, or, on a computer, use the Feedback button at the bottom left of any page in Champ. It helps to say which page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what you use, such as a screen reader, zoom or a keyboard. The Champ team will reply, and if we can fix it, we will.
